Full Text

July 16. A correspondent observes, that the method in which we treat the Irish is so extremely impolitic and barefacedly oppressive, that we ought not to be surprised, if they were driven by desperation and revenge, to act in a manner diametrically opposite to the interests of Great Britain. We seize their revenues with a merciless hand, and convert them to the uses of bribery and prostitution; we tax their labour and industry to provide for a set of the most worthless wretches in the creation. The complexion of the pensioners upon the Irish establishment is such as plainly to shew we must ransack the Jews, before we could find such a despicable group; and as to their places of profit, civil, military, and ecclesiastic, they are most of them filled with creatures belonging to the different Lord Lieutenants, insomuch that, though the Irish House of Commons have petitioned, they have never yet been able to obtain even a decent provision for their own Chaplain, who is, unfortunately for him, a native of that kingdom.
