BRUNSWICK, Ga.—A mass meeting of the citizens of Glynn county was held at the court house here today, called to promote cotton planting and farming in general, was very enthusiastic and attended by most of the farmers and business men of the county.
Prof. R. J. H. DeLoach, professor of cotton industry at the state college of agriculture, made an instructive address on the planting, cultivation and fertilization of cotton, covering every practical point from the preparation of the ground to the harvesting of the crop.
F. G. Eason, assistant drainage engineer, United States department of agriculture, addressed the convention along the lines of drainage. He pointed out that some of the best lands in the south are swamp lands properly drained. He commented on the fact that at present Georgia has no drainage laws.
A resolution was adopted unanimously urging the senator and representative from this district and county to obtain legislation providing for the establishment of an experimental cotton farm in this county.
A proposition to the farmers to install gins for the ginning of sea island and short cotton, provided they were assured that as much as 200 acres would be planted this year. Pledges have already been made for 325 acres, and it is expected that 500 acres will be planted.
The Retail Merchants and Business Men's Association and a great many citizens have made donations amounting to about $350 for the purchase of seed and the giving of prizes. The committee has offered sufficient sea island cotton seed to plant one acre and a like amount of short cotton seed for free distribution to all persons who will make an experimental planting.
