The subject of this sketch, Hon. L. T. Dashiell, representative from the district composed of Leon and Madison counties, is one of the youngest members of the house of representatives of the Twenty-third legislature.
Nomination by acclamation, which was followed by an election by 1155 majority over his opponents, were high endorsements attributed to the talent of this young man.
Young Dashiell was born in Chappell Hill, Tex., April 30, 1860, and is the son of that able and worthy Methodist minister, Rev. B. D. Dashiell.
In June, 1880, he graduated in the high school at Brenham, Tex., and in September following entered the University of Texas, where he remained four years, taking a special course. He was a member of the Rusk Literary society, and in 1884 was chosen as its commencement orator. He was for a while connected with the state geological survey. He studied law with his brother, B. D. Dashiell, in Jewett, Tex., was admitted to the bar in 1881, and was appointed county attorney in 1882, in which capacity he proved himself an able and fearless prosecutor.
After receiving the nomination for representative, he entered the campaign in behalf of his party; met Tracy and other leading Third party speakers in fifty-six public discussions, and on every occasion he proved to be an eminent and superior debater and expounder of Democratic doctrine.
With easy manner, a clear, penetrating voice and fluent flow of words, he presents a commanding appearance upon the floor of the house.
He seconded Mr. Gossett's nomination for speaker in one of the best speeches ever delivered in the representatives' hall of Texas, and on that and other occasions won the distinction of being one of the finest word painters in the house, while at the same time his speeches are supported by logical illustration and close reasoning.
