TONTINE TEMPERANCE.

Prohibition Society Organized by Men Who Drink.

WABASHA, Minn., Jan. 11.—A new organization, and the only one of the kind in existence, commenced business in this city Jan. 1. It is called "The Tontine Temperance association," and whilst incidentally it may be a benefit to the temperance cause, it is not organized with that end in view, but is intended to benefit its organizers. The plan of operations is, in brief, as follows:

On Jan. 1 all persons who decided to join the organization paid $5 each into its treasury. On April 1 such of those as have entirely abstained from the use of intoxicating liquors during the interval will pay another $5, but those who have not so abstained will be dropped from the membership rolls. On July 1 those who have continued to abstain will pay in another $5 each, whilst all who have fallen will be dropped. On Oct. 1 the faithful will pay in $5 more, each, and on Jan. 1 the entire fund in the treasury will be divided equally among the men who have steadfastly refused to imbibe.
