In the short period of forty-nine days, in this city alone; seven thousand seven hundred and fifty three persons have been called upon to exchange worlds—a daily average of more than one hundred and fifty eight.
From the 2d of June to the 25th of August, 3952 have perished from the cholera, a daily average of more than seventy-four; in forty nine days 3613 have died of this fearful epidemic. For the last five weeks, terminating with August 25th, the deaths from cholera and kindred complaints were as follows; Cholera 2415, cholera infantum 464, cholera morbus 84, diarrhea 274, dysentery 361, and inflammation of the bowels 71—making a total of 3669.
These facts are taken from the weekly reports of the City Inspector, and can be implicitly relied upon.
The actual mortality of 1842 can bear no comparison with the mortality of this summer; the total number of deaths during that entire year exceeded by only about two thousand, the total number during the last seven weeks.
Many a family is now clothed in weeds of mourning; and many a father, like the illustrious King, is constrained to say, with a touching emphasis, "I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."
The sound of music and dancing is still heard, but the noise of the hearse-wheels and the low tone of the cemetery bell are not forgotten.—Advocate and Journal.
