Of Extortion

Authorities in Juneau today washed their hands of a "kidnapping" case in the Gastineau Hotel.

Bob Rupe, who lives on the third floor, has received extortion letters from an unnamed number of extortionist-kidnapers on the same floor who demand "one quart of Scotch" for the safe return of Rupe's pride and joy.

Furthermore, the notes said, if payment is not made by Saturday, the ransom goes up to "two quarts."

Mr. Rupe, duly alarmed, today agreed to come to terms and asked the extortionists to name their intermediary.

Mr. Rupe's sleep-preventing automatic phonograph record radio attachment will be returned intact, it is said.
