THE EFFECT OF DEFEAT.—A regular knock-down took place yesterday afternoon, at the corner of West and Warren streets, between one of the defeated candidates and a gentleman of the 3d ward. It appears, that some one told the former that the latter had said, on the day of election, that he had withdrawn from the canvass in favor of the free soil candidate. This so enraged him, supposing that to be the cause of his defeat, that he determined to chastise, at sight, the man who would thus wantonly injure his political reputation. They did not meet until yesterday afternoon, when the émeute took place. Fortunately, no serious damage was done to either party.
