THE REASON WHY.

Pay Day "Came and Went"-The Bookkeeper Drew the Money.

New York, Nov. 2.-Thursday should have been pay day in the large works of the Elizabethport Steam Cordage company, but the day passed and no money was forthcoming. It was made public that Maj. Alfred V. Stanley, bookkeeper and paymaster, had disappeared after drawing $4,500 from the First National bank on the company's account, ostensibly to pay the men.

Nothing has been seen or heard of him since he left the bank. He is a widower with two children. When he drew the money from the bank on Thursday it was noticed that his hand trembled. He said he was in a great hurry, and did not feel well.
