MUST HAVE A SUGAR FACTORY.
The beet sugar factory at Eddy is on its second season's run and turning out 500 sacks of fine sugar every day. This factory has been a wonderful factor in advancing the material wealth of the Pecos valley, and in the upbuilding of that section of the territory, and yet that valley has not been more favored by nature than the country surrounding Santa Fe.
A sugar factory located in this city would prove a benefit in many, many ways. Land which is now of no practical use to anyone would become valuable and find ready sale; real estate in Santa Fe would advance in value; capital would seek investment in various enterprises, and, last but not least, would be the steady employment of the men who are now idle the greater part of the year. Resulting from these changes would be an increase in business of all kinds, and everybody in the city would share in the prosperity.
As a location for a beet sugar factory Santa Fe cannot be excelled by any other point in the southwest. Two lines of railroad furnish adequate shipping facilities to the cities of the north, east, south and west; thousands of acres of raw land admirably adapted to growing beets lie convenient to water and roads; water for irrigation is not lacking, while the experiments made the past season demonstrated beyond a doubt that beets of unexcelled richness in sugar can be raised with but little trouble and expense compared with the returns to be derived from them. What more favorable conditions could be asked
The situation resolves itself into one fact: Santa Fe must have a beet sugar factory. The way to secure that factory is to interest capital, and the only way to do that is for the businessmen and property owners to make a united effort, and the rest will be easy enough
