For Worcester South District,

JOHN DAVIS, Esq. of Worcester.

Hon. JONAS SIBLEY.

SUMNER BASTOW, Esq.

The Electors of Worcester South District have an opportunity now afforded them, by disregarding former party distinctions, of making such a choice for Representative to Congress as will elevate the character of the District, and that too without any sacrifice of principle. The magnanimous recommendation of the President, to yield 'to talents and virtue alone, that confidence which, in times of contention for principle, was bestowed only upon those who bore the badge of party communion,' the great unanimity with which it has been agreed to support a union Senatorial ticket, and the necessity of uniting, as much as possible, the good wishes of the community towards the new administration, all point to this course.

Who then shall be selected by us, to represent our feelings, and to support and defend our interests on the floor of Congress? Three Candidates are now before the public—Jonas Sibley, Esq. who, although the present incumbent, and whose claims, from that very circumstance, derive additional force, has, nevertheless, inspired so little confidence, that two different Caucuses of his own party have passed him by and taken another Candidate—Sumner Bastow, Esq. who at the first trial, although supported by a Caucus nomination, received but about one quarter of the votes;—and John Davis, Esq. who, resting on his own merits alone, without any adventitious aid whatever, has twice received a plurality of the votes of the District. Need we any stronger evidence of his superior claims? If we do, it may be found in the clearness of perception and the strength of mind which, in a few years only, have made him the greatest & most successful practitioner at our Bar,—in the purity of mind and integrity of principle which have placed him above the breath of suspicion, and in that determination of purpose which leads him to the successful accomplishment of whatever he undertakes, and which inspires a confidence which has never yet been misplaced. This is no overwrought panegyrick. For its truth we may appeal to those who best know him—to his clients, who will, with one accord, bear testimony to the patient industry with which he has devoted himself to their business, to the ability with which he has overcome all difficulties, which were not insurmountable, and to the honesty with which he has advised them to the safest course, regardless of its effect on his own private interest.

Such are the men offered for our choice, and although we entertain a high personal respect for the two former, we think it no disparagement to them to say, that in all the essential qualifications for the office in question, the latter stands decidedly pre-eminent.

At the Federal Republican meeting held at the Court-House on the 16th inst. pursuant to notice in the last Spy, it was unanimously voted to concur in the nomination of Levi Lincoln for Governor, and Marcus Morton for Lieut. Governor for the year ensuing. A committee was then selected to nominate suitable candidates to be supported for Senators at the approaching election, after which the meeting adjourned till the next evening. At the adjourned meeting, the committee reported a list which had been agreed upon, jointly with a committee from the meeting of Democratic Republicans then in session. This list was adopted by both meetings, after which they went into joint Convention, the proceedings of which are as follows :—

At a Meeting of the Electors of Worcester County, without distinction of party, held at the Court-House, in Worcester, on Thursday, the 17th inst. Calvin Willard, Esq. in the chair—it was
