FROM THE BOSTON PATRIOT.—EXTRACT.
JAMES MONROE.
Through the various public employments of this distinguished statesman, there has been no hesitancy in encountering the fair responsibilities of office. With a just reliance on the intelligence and firmness of his fellow citizens, he has never evaded the honorable discharge of public duty, through any mean and pitiful attempt for personal popularity. The eminence of his stations have been acquired by no unworthy sacrifice of principle, by no artifice for factitious applause. In the commencement of his career he did not shrink from the frowns of administration, while maintaining the purity of his Republican principles; nor did he more recently hesitate to jeopardise his long acquired reputation with the people, by a proposition of bold but wholesome severity. He has wisely trusted to the good sense of his countrymen.—The fame he acquired is that which follows great actions, not that which is unworthily pursued. It is that which reflects its lustre on the intelligence which bestows it. He is now destined to a more interesting, a more responsible, a more extensive duty. The honor and the fortune of a rising empire is to be entrusted to his charge. The happiness of unborn millions in a great measure rests on the wisdom and honor of the first magistrate of the nation
His well established character gives a pledge of his future usefulness. He will preside over the nation in the full vigor of intelligence and virtue. A long series of faithful and honorable services are the sureties of his integrity and his recent official acts seal the opulence and powers of mind, of which age has not dimmed the discernment nor enfeebled the fancy; neither repressed the ardor, nor narrowed the range.
