When everything was still because of summer,
And even time did seem to hold her breath.
I watched the sun swing to the height of heaven
And the pale distance. At noonday sweet to my heart the world of little things,
With its murmurous way with fluttering wings,
Or light with feet so infinitely small,
The pathway, that it made no noise at all.
I, wide awake. Smiled from a daisy's face;
A water lily, in contentment cool,
Lay on the silver surface of a pool,
And living, quivering colors were the flowers
Shone in sunshine through the maiden hours;
If dusk should dim and blur them into night.
In the fullness of summer, sealed from end to end in that awareness all things
Most beautiful. From bud to blossom and sweet scent to fruit,
Fly with lilting movement of a
fin
Fish through clear water, a petal fell
To wither and, once more, all was
still.
