YR.
We are aware that in thus greeting our readers we are about eight hours too early, but Friday afternoon will be too late. Besides it is always better to be ahead of than behind the times.
So we most heartily welcome the joyous youth who will at twelve o'clock to-night come capering on the stage, advance to the footlights, make his best bow, and greet us all with a
"Happy New-Year."
This youth has a very large audience, and very much mixed. Many hundreds of millions of people greet him as he steps out, rosy and supple, to greet his friends.
It is a good time to join the Dashaways this afternoon, for who knows what a day may bring forth. The best resolutions of sobriety quickly, and oh! so easily, vanish under the smiles of fair maidens whom to-morrow we shall call upon, the proffered glass of sparkling wine, and the seductive yet more solid stimulants of rum punch, egg-nog or Tom and Jerry.
Many a broken resolve will be chronicled to-morrow night and charged to these entrancing tempters. Ladies, beware! Gentlemen, ditto. Imbibe not of the vinous or alcoholic; that is, not more than is portable without fatigue. After the fiftieth call a tablespoonful weighs a ton. Everybody will be happy to-morrow, and everybody ought to be; for it is a good thing to be alive in this age and in this State at present. The News most heartily joins in the universal greeting which proclaims the advent of the year.
Eighteen Hundred and Seventy-four.
Whew! how time flies. A "Happy New-Year" to all.
