Full Text

Captain Lutterel, in the Charon of 44 guns, together with the Pomona and Lowestoft of 28 guns, the Porcupine and Racoon sloops, took on the 26th of October, the fort of Omoa, in the bay of Honduras, for the ransom of which, 300,000 dollars were offered. Two hundred and fifty quintals of quick silver were found in the fort, for which the Spaniards offered double the value, as they could not work their mines without it. Both the offers were refused. Captain Lutterell took besides two register ships of the value of 5,000,000 of dollars. The fort was taken by an inferior force by storm. Captain Lutterell's summons of surrender, and his conduct after taking of the fort, were replete with the courage and humanity which form the characteristic of the British nation, and afford a very strong contrast to the barbarity of the Spaniards at St. George's Key, where they have erected scaffolds for their prisoners, having given orders to put to immediate death every one who resisted. St. George's Key was retaken by the same fleet.

The possession of this fort will be of great consequence, as it will serve to protect the logwood trade from the Mosquito shore.
