Charles B. Sande, Yellowstone county attorney, spoke on a controversial subject gambling laws for Montana, when he addressed the Laurel Rotary club at its noon luncheon meeting Tuesday.
He briefly reviewed the state's constitutional provision prohibiting gambling and recent legislation. According to Sande, the present difficulty arises from the fact that the law governing the licensing of slot machines is so worded as to be open to various interpretations, and until the supreme court renders an opinion it will be impossible to determine how the law shall be enforced.
At present some counties are allowing the operation of slot machines under certain conditions while others are not, a situation that results in confusion.
Speaking of the enforcement in Yellowstone county, he said that he had conformed to orders of the attorney general. Sande then discussed the economic and moral aspects of gambling.
In the discussion period that followed his address the members in attendance asked questions and expressed their own views. The general attitude as indicated by the discussion was against legalized gambling. The members complimented Sande on his stand and the means he is using to enforce the law.
Guests at the meeting were Dr. W. P. Copeland, Billings, and Dr. E. W. Fuller, Beatrice, Neb. Chester Scott was program committeeman. Vice Pres. Wayne Hageman presided.
