Free and Independent States!—Colonel Duane says, "the public apathy is beyond any thing perhaps known in a free state." We agree with the colonel, that the public apathy is beyond any thing ever known in a free state. But are the U. States free states? Can a nation be called free, when under the control of such a government as Duane has described ours to be? What does the colonel think of free states governed by such a man as Albert Gallatin? We mean, provided he believes what he has written of Mr. Gallatin. The truth is, not to say a word of "Napolen our King," if one half what the democrats say of each other is true, our nation is under a set of rulers unfit to govern any people; and if we are really compelled to submit to such a government, the United States have very little claim to the title of free states.—Commercial Advertiser.
