Full Text

Copy of a letter from Lieut. Jeffers, dated Fort-Franklin, the 16th December, 1791.

By express to the commanding officer at Pittsburgh, or Major J. Irwin, of the militia.

SIR,

"I have this moment received authentic accounts from the Cornplanter, that an attack on this garrison will almost immediately take place; for the Indians from below declare that they are determined to reduce this place, shake the Cornplanter by the head, and sweep the river from end to end.

"You are most earnestly requested, and if I have any authority, positively ordered, to send, without loss of time, one subaltern and 30 men as a reinforcement, together with my men who have been left sick at Fort Pitt. Under this convoy, send me provisions to make five months rations for 70 men. This news is not fictitious; nor this letter to be trifled with. I have written to the minister of war; but his orders will come too late. I am, &c.

J. JEFFERS."
A message from his Excellency the Governor to the Legislature, last Friday, informed them of further alarms at Pittsburgh, on account of the Indians—that a plan of defensive operations has been recently proposed to him by the President of the United States—"which as it claims in some respects the sanction of their legislature, he submits to their consideration"—suggesting at the same time the necessity of adequate appropriations of money, for arms and ammunition, &c. to co-operate in the measures of the federal government for the protection of the frontiers.

This message was accompanied by a letter from the citizens of Pittsburgh, to the Governor, and two letters from Lieut. Jeffers, commanding officer at Fort-Franklin—all of which express the strongest apprehensions of an immediate attack by the savages on the above fort.
