Ageless Satchel Paige was shelled for two quick runs by the Kansas City Monarchs, who defeated the Harlem Stars, 6-3 Sunday in Ponce de Leon Park.
The veteran barnstorming pitcher, who reached the major league in the twilight of a brilliant career, playing with the Cleveland Indians and the St. Louis Browns is starring on a Southwide trek with Goose Tatum.
A crowd of 1,300 fans witnessed the abbreviated contest which was made bobtail by rain.
Paige gave up two runs in the first inning before settling down to enthrall spectators with occasionally flashes of his old mastery. In the three innings he worked, the Ancient One gave up three hits and struck out five Monarchs.
Paige and Tatum, who reside in Kansas City, Mo., were signed by Ted Rasberry, Grand Rapids, Mich. businessman for their current tour.
The duo has been drawing huge crowds during their Southern tour.
