QUIET CHRISTMAS DAY
Vigo County, Indiana,
AT THE WHITE HOUSE
There Was No Family Tree, but Archie Roosevelt Had One of Bridge Bonds.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 25.—Christmas at the White House was a quiet day. President Roosevelt's morning ride was abandoned that he might attend the funeral services of Mrs. Hoar. Prior to this he spent rather at his desk. Distribution of the numerous presents to the children took place immediately after breakfast. There was no family tree, although Archie Roosevelt took possession of the White House sewing room several days ago and devised a tree of his own, on which he hung remembrances to the family. Secretary Cortelyou, of the Department of Commerce and Labor, and General Young, chief of staff of the army, saw the President during the morning. Commander and Mrs. Cowles spent a portion of the day at the White House. The President and Mrs. Roosevelt had a few personal friends with them at dinner at the White House to-night. Those present included Senator and Mrs. Lodge, Mr. and Mrs. George C. Lodge, Mrs. John Lodge, Captain and Mrs. Cowles, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Adams, Mrs. Charles Henry Davis, Miss Davis, the Masters Davis, Lieutenant Granville R. Fortesque and Mr. R. H. M. Ferguson, of New York. The British ambassador and Lady Durand and their daughter celebrated their first Washington Christmas by entertaining the embassy staff at dinner to-night, and at the Austrian, French, German and other embassies members of the diplomatic corps and others were entertained at dinner.
