A Letter from Bengal in February last to a Gentleman here says, "We have had great Alarms on the Coast, occasioned by the Advance, of a Body of Troops under Heyder Ally, who has taken two or three Forts, some Pieces of Cannon, and several Prisoners from us; which Success has so greatly elated him as to induce him to proceed in his Enterprizes. The above Occurrence, for the present, occasions the utmost Confusion on all Parts of the Coast."
Another account says, Hyder Ally has shewn as great Generalship, in his late proceedings, as any European could have done. He has got possession of the whole country, quite to Madrass, and has summoned the town to surrender; which required fifty days to give an answer; but Ally would allow but seven, and said, if the answer was not satisfactory, he would burn the Black Town immediately, which he can do. He has a fine, well disciplined army; &, it is further said, he has intercepted some of our troops.
Further accounts are daily expected of the state of our affairs in the East Indies, by the ships that are still to arrive this year. By the last intelligence it appears, that matters are in such a critical footing in the Carnatic, as must lead immediately either to a peace with Heyder Ally and the Company, or a decisive action, that must produce very momentous consequences to one of the parties.
