Dr. Larzette G. Hale, chairman of the Department of Business Administration Department at Clark College, directed a "Problem Clinic" during the Tuskegee Secretarial Association's Annual Secretarial Institute Wednesday, April 25.
Theme of the Institute was "Human Relations--the Road to Secretarial Success."
Centered around problems involved in improving secretarial techniques, the "Problem Clinic" was the Institute's coordinating feature. Secretaries and others in attendance posed questions to the resource persons during this period making use of the information and materials presented in previous sessions. Questions were formed before the Clinic began and reviewed by Dr. Hale who directed them to appropriate resource persons. Many important questions were raised and the response to the Clinic suggested that it was one of the Institute's most valuable features.
The program included a keynote address by Dr. A. V. Caliman, Chief Clinical Psychologist of Tuskegee's VA Hospital, on "Understanding People--Human Relations and Motivations"; a symposium on "Improving Secretarial Techniques" and two lectures: "Importance of Human Relations to the Secretary" by Mrs. Oretha B. Waller and "Effective Communication" by Harold O. Duncan.
Commenting on the clinic and the Institute generally, Dr. Hale said that an attempt was made to explore secretarial standards with a view to establishing a higher degree of uniformity and accomplishments in the field.
Resource persons included Dr. Alys Caliman, Harold O. Duncan, Dr. Don Driggs, James C. Gaskin, Robert Haith, Jr., Albert Milan, S. V. Jeter, Mesdames Catherine B. Gordon, Oretha Waller and Miss Olivia D. Smith.
Clark Business Manager S. V. Jeter called the Institute "very stimulating" and said that a "spirited discussion" characterized the Clinic where he served as a resource leader. Answering questions relating to attitudes secretaries should form when a new "boss" takes over, Mr. Jeter advised that the secretary study the new employer to the extent that she is able to determine how much help he would like to have.
Sessions were held in the V. A. Hospital's Recreation Building; and the program--sponsored jointly by the Tuskegee Secretaries Association and the Veterans Administration Hospital--was in observance of National Secretaries Day.
