U.S. To Start Work On New Embassy Bldg.

By STERLING SLAPPEY

LONDON (P)—The United States is about to start work on a new and bigger embassy in the Grosvenor Square area that Londoners call "Little America."

The present building is too small. There are 500 to 600 Americans in the embassy and closely related offices, such as visa and financial sections. In addition, there are many British employees.

Congress has appropriated three million dollars for a new building just across the square.

"You can be very sure the building won't be one of those all-glass affairs," an official said. "It will not be supermodern either. It will blend with existing buildings even though it may not be Georgian in design."

"We hope to get started on the new embassy late this year or early in the spring. In a couple of years it should be finished."

The present main embassy building is a five-floor Georgian structure.

The American government bought Grosvenor Square property during the 1930s and since then has occasionally added other bits of property in the area. Seven buildings of various sizes are in use. When architects draw plans, they will try to get all the embassy offices under the same roof.

Jobs performed by Americans vary widely at the embassy, biggest in America's foreign service. There are teams of specialists working on almost every phase of international affairs, from East-West relations to civil aviation. Each department has a clerical staff, including some British nationals.

There are also a large Marine detachment and a big Navy headquarters.
