DROWNED.—A young colored man, twenty years of age, named Charles Holmes, hailing from Alexandria, Va., and a deck hand upon the steamer Express, now lying at pier 9 Light street, while rolling a hogshead of tobacco ashore, at 4:30 o'clock this morning, accidentally missed his footing from the gang plank, and falling overboard into the basin was drowned before assistance could reach him. The body was recovered by several of the deck hands, assisted by Officer Sauer, of the Southern District. Dr. R. C. Lee, Coroner of the Southern District, was notified, but after making an investigation declined holding an inquest, as the man's death was clearly accidental. The remains will be taken to Alexandria by a brother of deceased.—Balt. News.
