Give the Young men a Chance.

We do not, of course, mean to
say that every man who does not
happen to be young ought to be
sent to the right about; far from it.
Age and experience are invaluable
when they are found in the path
of honor. But the young men
ought to have a chance. No great
business establishment, no strong
government can be kept up satis-
factorily without the constant effu-
sion of new and young blood. And
if it is thus with governments, sure-
ly it must be so with parties. One
of Mr. Gladstone's greatest mis-
takes was that he never looked
around among his younger follow-
ers for recruits. He perpetually
went to the same old bins for his
wine; and the day came when the
bins were empty, or when what
was found in them was worthless.
One of Mr. Disraeli's merits, and
one of the secrets of his present
popularity, is that he has always kept an
eye open for the young and prom-
ising men. And this is a lesson to
which leaders of parties every-
where need not disdain to pay
heed.—N. Y. Herald.

The above contains a world of
truth and common sense. Age and
experience serve well in its proper
sphere. But in the active every
day bustle of busy life—in business
in the mechanical arts, in govern-
ment, in politics, the young men
should come to the fore. We need
their energy, enterprise, their
young vigorous blood and fresh
new ideas to keep pace with the
rapid march of events. The "old
and new" will do well enough in
conjunction, but the "old" alone,
is too prone to run in old grooves,
and hence so much old fogy legis-
lation and connected old fogyism in
business. Give the young men a
chance.
