Reception to Governor Tilden.
From the Baltimore Gazette.
New York, October 30.—The reception at the Manhattan club this evening matched the brilliant gathering with which the club celebrated Tilden's election as Governor two years ago. Mr. A. Belmont welcomed Mr. Tilden in a speech devoted to the financial issues of the canvass, and containing a flat denial of the pretended dispatches that democratic success would injure the national credit. "Our bonds," said he, "are held in Europe next to English consols, and their payment is no more likely to be disturbed by a change of parties. So far as the syndicate is concerned, and the report that it is proposed to suspend operations, the speaker said, no such information has been received in New York by any of the members of the syndicate who represent here their friends and correspondents in Europe, and no such feeling exists as has been represented. Yes, gentlemen, our federal bonds are strong because a mighty nation, and not ephemeral politicians, support them. Political parties are transitory and mortal like ourselves. Our country alone is permanent and immortal. Speeches were also made by Senator Stockton, of New Jersey; Governor Walker, of Virginia, and Senator Wallace, of Pennsylvania, the last predicting a majority for Tilden in that State. Gov. Tilden made no speech, but was the centre of a group, in active conversation all the evening, and looked extraordinarily well and vigorous. Local politics of the action of the anti Tammany convention in endorsing the Tammany nomination for Mayor, Smith Ely, jr., and in withdrawing James O'Brien from his candidature as Sheriff ends all dissensions among the democrats in the city. No ground for combination and trading with the republicans exists. The full democratic vote will be polled to the last man, and a majority of 60,000 is considered probable. The rest of the nominations made by anti Tammany are made purely to keep the organization together, and with no thought of success. The action taken to night by the organization ends Mr. Green's candidature. He will be kept in the field, but will have no strength. The contest has become so hopeless that it is extremely doubtful if Governor Dix is nominated by the republicans, as Mayor. The last hope of the republican party for carrying the State is now gone.
