Father And Son Declare They
Were Looking Over Real Estate
Despite their protestations of innocence, a 63-year-old man and his 40-year-old son were ordered held last Friday for action of a federal grand jury on charges of operating an unregistered still.
Charles D. Wigley, the father, and Charles L. Wigley, of near Bloomington, were ordered held in the Allegany county jail in default of bond after a preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner James Alfred Avirett, at Cumberland. Bond for the younger Wigley, who allegedly has a record of two previous convictions on federal liquor charges, was set at $1,000; that for his father, at $500.
The defendants, represented by Attorney Estel C. Kelley, denied even knowing of the existence of the still and said they were in the vicinity to look over some land they were considering buying.
But David H. Walker, Federal Alcohol Tax Unit agent, identified the pair as the two men he had seen at the still just a few minutes before they were captured about 100 yards from the plant.
Walker, along with Agent Charles E. Cushaw, arrested the men Wednesday and confiscated the 65-gallon still and 150 gallons of mash.
The agents said the still was located along the Savage river, about two miles from Bloomington.
