From Vera Cruz and Tampico.
The U. S. steamer Galveston arrived yesterday from Vera Cruz, which place she left on the 5th, touching at Tampico. We have received our regular files by this arrival, but find nothing new in them. No further information had been received from Gen. Scott, or the trains under escort of Generals Cadwallader and Pillow. Gen. Pierce, with the reinforcements that were at Vera Cruz, exceeding 8000 men, was nearly ready to start for Jalapa and Puebla. By a passenger in the Galveston, we learn that a great deal of excitement existed at Vera Cruz; in consequence of the numerous deaths among those men of Gen. Pillow's command, that had broken down and been compelled to return to Vera Cruz, in consequence of the mid-day's march, in the hot sun and burning sands, when they first left Vera Cruz. Gen. Pillow is loudly and deeply censured for sacrifice of life that had been occasioned by this proceeding on his part. Advices had been received at Tampico, that the American prisoners that belonged to Maj. Gaines' command and had been sent from Mexico, were detained about 130 miles from Tampico, and were very badly treated. In consequence, Col. De Russy, with four pieces of artillery and 600 men, had left Tampico for the purpose of releasing and bringing them into the city. It is probable that some fighting will occur before it can be accomplished.
