Runaway Auto Crashes Pole
Wreck Is Mystery
A runaway auto which crashed into a utility pole on Flagler Ave. early Christmas Eve and the actions of persons near the scene posed a Class A mystery for the police department.
At about 7:30 p. m., a report of the crash was telephoned to the police station by a resident of the area.
Patrolman John A. Teel, Jr., was dispatched to investigate and was told by eye witnesses that a man had leaped from the auto about one-half block from the scene of the crash.
The man was reported to have been picked up by another auto and rushed from the scene.
Teel checked the hospital for the admission of an injured person and was informed at the Naval Hospital that an injured man had been admitted.
The hospital could give no information and the police appealed to the shore patrol office.
The shore patrol soon reported that the injured man was Sgt. Jose A. Gallardo y Pacheco of the Marine Corps. and reported that he said his auto had stopped and a passing motorist was giving him a push. When the auto started his brakes failed, he became scared and jumped from the vehicle.
Police are still investigating.
