Nearly five thousand more Montana sportsmen bought big game licenses prior to opening day of hunting season this year than in 1960, according to figures compiled through Sept. 30 by the Montana Fish and Game Department.
The number this year totalled some 37,470 as compared to nearly 33,000 sold prior to October in 1960.
However, these totals are expected to increase as hunting season progresses and additional licenses are sold from day to day.
An accurate total of the department's entire year's sales will be available in December when reports from the 500 license agents throughout the state are compiled.
The non-resident $50 big game license sale of 1,712, up through Sept. 30, was also an increase over the 1,642 sold by that time last year. This does not include the $20 non-resident special deer licenses which are obtained by several hundred out-of-staters who hunt deer only in specified areas of the state.
A slight decrease was noted in the number of resident bird and fish licenses. Some 143,814 sportsmen bought this license as compared to 145,000 in 1960. The special $2.00 turkey license sale was again high, 883 being sold so far.
This will increase as more hunters are expected to participate in the third special season, from Nov. 5 through Nov. 12, in the Missouri River Breaks area.
