THE FEDERALISTS REBUKED BY
THE RUSSIAN CONSUL.
On receiving the late news of negotiation between the continental allies & Bonaparte, the Boston federalists denounced Russia and Austria in bitter terms for their supposed independence of England. True to their British trusts, and zealous in their British vocation, they did not wait to ascertain to a certainty whether Russia had acted without the dictation of the fast anchored isle; but on the mere supposition that they had, those base and vicious tools of the enemy began to revile those whose magnanimity & heroism they had but just been celebrating by public festivals. This shews beyond the possibility of doubt, that the northern opposition, and some of those to the south too, are in the heart & soul British. They care not a straw for Russia, America or any other power, save England; she is their idol -and we sincerely wish they would leave this country, and take up their abode under the British government. They are worse than a pestilence to the country. They are unprincipled and unfaithful citizens, and worthless men. The Russian consul, piqued at the conduct of the British partizans in Boston, immediately wrote a communication for the Gazette of that place, reproving them in sharp terms. He also took occasion to rebuke the Federal Republican and the other British papers for having censured Mr. Daschkoff on the subject of the Russian mediation. (On this point he says:--"The Editor of the Federal Republican chooses to denounce Mr. Daschkoff for having made a supposed unauthorized offer of mediation: and yet see he has been deceived though he has had the wrong sort of pride not to confess his error") We can assure Mr. Eustaphieve, that he is mistaken if he supposes the anglo-federalists have any regard for Russia, except when they think Russia condescends to be the honourable tool of England. The celebration of Russian victories was only a disguise to cover their joy at the triumphs of Great Britain.
