The number of letters, domestic and foreign, received at the dead letter office during the last fiscal year was as follows: Domestic letters, classed as ordinary, 2,882,863; drop, 475,300; unmailable, 384,190; hotel, 27,410; fictitious, 86,663; registered, 6,153; returned from foreign countries, 69,461; total domestic letters, 3,932,015; foreign letters, 220,115; whole number, 4,152,130.
The ordinary revenues of the department for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1870, were $19,772,220, and the expenditures of all kinds $23,908,837. For the year ended June 30, 1869, the ordinary revenues were $18,311,510, and the expenditures $23,693,131. The increase of revenue for the year 1870 over the year 1869 was $1,460,709, or 7.98 per cent., and the increase of expenditures $215,706, showing a net increase in revenue of $1,245,003. The increase in revenue for the year 1870 over the year 1868 was $3,479,619, and the increase of expenditures for 1870 over 1868 was $1,268,211. The increase in revenue for 1870, as compared with 1869, was less than the increase for 1869, as compared with 1868, by $621,199; and the increase in expenditures for 1870, as compared with 1869, was less than the increase for 1869, as compared with 1868, by $996,532.
