Full Text

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in the state of New-Hampshire to his friend in this city.

"You will see by the public papers, that the loan in New-England is much smaller than might have been reasonably expected without allowing for the influence of hostile political societies.

"A branch of the "Washington Benevolent Society" is now formed and systematised in this, and I believe every town of considerable population in the northern and middle states. The plan is conducted with so much secrecy and intrigue throughout, that many here are of opinion that if war should not take place at the expiration of the embargo, a revolution in the government will be produced.

"If war should then take place, as is generally expected, the artifice I think will be more thoroughly exposed, the leaders will be intimidated, & these societies will probably disappear.

"These associations at present consist not only of partizans, but of almost every individual of the minority, with all others whom ignorance, credulity, or party indifference render liable to bribery or deception."
