CIO Abolishes
Segregation

WASHINGTON (ANP)- All segregation should be abolished in the use of facilities in buildings or office space under the control of CIO Industrial Union councils, Arthur J. Goldberg, CIO general counsel, announced recently.

In a memorandum sent to all CIO regional directors, and state and city industrial union councils last Tuesday, Goldberg said that "any statute or ordinance" which requires CIO organizations or bodies to practice segregation in any form is "not only diametrically opposed to CIO policy; they are also void because they violate the Constitution of the United States."

The memo pointed out that the Supreme Court of the United States has before it at the present time three cases in which the validity of government regulations requiring racial segregation are in question.

In all three of the cases, Henderson vs. U. S., Sweatt vs. Painter, and McLaurin vs. Oklahoma, the CIO has taken a firm position that any statute, regulation or ordinance which compels the practice of segregation is in violation of the Constitution.
