"Prove all Things."
We would like to know upon what authority the Ledger calls the New York Graphic a Republican paper, and we would also like to know upon what authority it assumes that James K. Magie has lied concerning Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic nominee for president. We would also like to know upon what authority it declares we have used against Mr. Tilden "vile epithets." We propose to be responsible for all that we say, and we desire to know whether the Ledger will assume a similar responsibility for its utterances. We propose to be fair, reasonable, candid and truthful in all that we may say in this political campaign. We have used no epithet against Mr. Tilden not previously used by Democratic papers, and if we have misrepresented Mr. Tilden in any one particular we will cheerfully make correction, when it shall so appear. The Canton Register is a public newspaper. Its editorials are public property after they are printed, but no man has a right to say that we have lied in any of our editorials without at least pointing out the lie and giving us some opportunity to defend ourselves. We are not conscious of having uttered any lie in these columns concerning Mr. Tilden. If anybody disputes the truth of what we have uttered concerning him he has only to quote the language and ask us to verify our words. If we then refuse to meet the issue, then may it be said we have lied, and not until then.
About twelve hundred of the prominent Republicans of Peoria met Monday evening and organized a Hayes and Wheeler club.
The two T's--Tweed and Tilden.
