WASHINGTON - (ANP) - Aaron Perry's hopes of becoming a successful fighter were suddenly crushed last week, when the one-time local middle-weight champion was arrested on charges of robbery and housebreaking.
The 25-year-old Perry and a 23-year-old companion, Charles Turner are being held under a $10,000 bond each on the charge of entering the apartment of Maurice K. Lewis on July 2 and taking $30 and a wrist watch.
Perry had a brilliant beginning as a fighter who soared to fistic fame while still in his teens. The hard-hitting welterweight met hammering Hank Armstrong in 1944 before a $60,000 gate, the largest ever involving a Washington fighter.
After doing a short stint in the army Perry resumed fighting in 1945 becoming one of the top king pins in the game.
