Laval Dismisses Alleged Plotter

Vichy, Sept. 26. (UP)—Chief of Government Pierre Laval today dismissed Jacques Benoist-Mechin, secretary of state for German relations, from the cabinet and the presidency of the Tricolor Legion on the charge that he had plotted against him (Laval) in Paris.

Mechin vigorously but vainly resisted the dismissal order.

(The Tricolor Legion is that formed to provide "volunteers" to fight with the Germans against Russia.)

Laval charged that he had caught Mechin in a plot to interest the Germans in a new Vichy cabinet which would eliminate Laval and include Jacques Doriot, and Vice Adm. Charles Platon, secretary of state in the cabinet under Laval's prime ministry.

(Doriot is a Quisling French leader of the extreme right wing, headquartered at Paris, where he has previously sided with the Germans even against the Vichy government.)

Under the set-up which Mechin was charged with plotting, he would have had a much more important post.
