The crest of the present rise in the Mississippi river reached Memphis Monday morning when the government gauge registered 30.8 feet. The official prediction given out by the local office of the weather bureau indicates that this stage will be maintained for about 24 hours and the river will then fall.
The crest at Helena will be 39 feet the official forecast declares. On Monday morning the gauge registered 37.1 feet. A stage of 38.7 feet was recorded at Cairo.
The figures shown by the official government instruments Monday indicates that the forecast, made a week ago by S. C. Emery, local forecaster, has been substantiated. He stated that the stage at Memphis would be about 31 feet. There is no indication at this time that the river will go any above that figure.
