AN ELOPEMENT FROM CANTON:

The Wife, Husband and Lover Meet at Mansfield and the Latter Skips

A special from Mansfield says:

"Last Saturday a lot of household goods arrived in this city from Canton, and subsequently were called for by a woman of ordinary appearance accompanied by a youth of about twenty or more. The goods were removed to a house in the suburbs, where the couple commenced housekeeping. Later the happiness of the household was broken up by the appearance of a man from Canton who gave his name as Frank Hardesty. He stated that his wife had eloped with a young man named John Shay, and had taken all the furniture. An officer accompanied Hardesty to the house, the former doing the talking. Shay came to the door and said in reply to questions that he was married and lived there; that his name was Frank Hardesty, and in proof showed Hardesty's marriage license. This dumbfounded the officer and he sought out Hardesty for an explanation. The latter then faced the couple, who in turn were now dumbfounded. Shay blamed the matter on the woman, and the whole affair wound up by Shay agreeing to leave the city. Hardesty and his wife have compromised, and they are now living in the house prepared by her lover. The woman in this case, Mrs. Frank Hardesty, filed a petition for divorce in Common Pleas Court here on June 8th, alleging gross neglect and extreme cruelty on the part of her husband. The man mentioned as Shay is John, otherwise "Tip," Shearer, well known about town."
