TO DODGE TRIAL
Government Counsel Scores
Indicted Trust Officials.
Chicago, Nov. 17.--Charging that the
nine indicted packers were attempting
to avoid just punishment for illegal
acts by dodging a court trial and carrying
their contention to the United
States supreme court, James Sheean,
special counsel for the government,
closed his argument in the habeas
corpus hearing before Judge Kohlsaat.
In closing his address Attorney Sheean
said:
Counsel on behalf of the government
are not deceived as to the meaning of
this move. These men want a
short path to the supreme court by
way of habeas corpus writ, and there
they would allow the matter to rest for
two years.
"That is what this proceeding means.
Two years hence our witnesses, now
available, will have disappeared and
documentary evidence cannot be identified.
The excuse of the defense is no
legal excuse. These men cannot lift
this case from the district court to the
supreme court on the weak-kneed arguments
presented."
Mr. Meyer characterized the argument
of Mr. Sheean as a "cleverly conceived
speech not at all relating to the
facts at issue."
The surprise came with the filing by
the government of its motion to quash
the writ of habeas corpus because the
defendants were never in actual custody
of any process or writ. Affidavits
in support of this were filed by
District Attorney Wilkerson.
PLAYING FOR TIME
This Is Solicitor General Lehmann's
Opinion of Chicago Packers.
Washington, Nov. 17.--Solicitor General
Lehmann in the course of a conversation
had a word or two to say in
regard to the action of the Chicago
packers in rushing into court to give
themselves up and get a writ of habeas
corpus after having avoided a
trial for years. In the solicitor general's
opinion the new move was designed
solely to insure further delay.
