Full Text

Dr. O'Meara, the author of the Voice from St. Helena, has been brought before the judicial authorities of London, to answer for a flagellation, which he administered to Mr. Wm. Walters, mistaking him for his namesake, the editor of the Times. The doctor was accompanied by counsellor Phillips, who made a very appropriate speech on the occasion, well spiced with apology, to which Mr. Walters replied, and assured Sir R. Birnie, the magistrate, that his primary object was, that a proper apology should appear in the newspapers, and assented to a reference to friends. This arrangement was consented to by the magistrates but at the same time, he required doctor O'Meara, to enter into a recognizance to keep the peace in relation to Mr. John Walters, the editor, which was agreed to. If a newspaper apology is a sufficient satisfaction for so sound a drubbing, it is quid pro quo that may be very convenient to editors, even if it is not supported by precedents in its favour. With every respect, however, for the moderation of Mr. Walters, it is difficult to conceive the doctor could have rendered retributive justice, without having made a profert of his own back in return.
