With the growth of anti-German feeling in Russia early in the war there was developed a dislike for the name St. Petersburg, which was of German origin and termination. The czar, in opening the duma, said: "The German empire and later Austria-Hungary have declared war on Russia. The tremendous outburst of patriotic sentiment, of love and loyalty to the throne which, like a tempest, traversed our entire land - is to me, as it is to you, a pledge. I hope that the great Russia will conduct to a happy conclusion the war which the Lord has sent." One of the first things the duma did was to change the German-sounding name St. Petersburg to the Slavic word Petrograd.
