Shelburne Falls, Mass., Jan. 11.—Who it was that so brutally took the life of Mrs. Hattie E. McCloud, by strangling, on Friday evening, is still unknown, notwithstanding the fact that State Detectives Fred Rhodes of Malden, Daniel Hammond of Haverhill, Moses Pease of Lee and Brunson Munyon of Haydenville have been hard at work on the case.
Every thread of evidence has been carefully traced, and the scene of the tragedy on lonely West Mountain was visited by hundreds yesterday. Mrs. McCloud was last seen alive at 7 o'clock Friday evening by Frank S. Tatrean, a local carpenter. He heard the clock in the village tower strike at the time, and as Frank Turton, aged 14, and little Alberta, the daughter of the dead woman, passed along the road by the scene of the murder about 7:30, it seems that the murder was done in this half hour. The body was found about 70 feet from the road, and the chances are that the murderer stood behind a large tree by the roadside and seized and strangled his victim as she passed. That the assailant had another motive than robbery now seems probable. The officers believe the crime was committed by some one living in the town, and will offer a reward of $500 for the arrest and conviction of the murderer.
