Yesterday was a red letter day in the history of Old Pohick and Olivet Episcopal Churches, Fairfax county, for it brought with it the first visit of Coadjutor Bishop Brown to these churches. Bishop Brown, accompanied by the Rev. Dr. S. A. Wallis, of the Theological Seminary, drove down from the Seminary and reached historic Old Pohick Church in good time for the service. A large congregation had assembled to greet Bishop Brown.
Five persons were confirmed by him, one of these being baptised immediately beforehand by Dr. Wallis who also baptised two children at the same time. Bishop Brown preached a sermon most appropriate to the occasion which was delivered in well chosen language fluently and without a single note.
The service was held at Olivet Church in the afternoon, the church being filled to its utmost capacity. Bishop Brown baptised an infant and confirmed two persons. At night he preached and confirmed two persons at Sharon Chapel, one of the Seminary Missions and confirmed two persons. this making nine persons confirmed in all at the three services.
Bishop Brown made a splendid impression He asked in each case that the announcement be made that he desired to meet everyone at each service individually. His warm hearted greeting of each one and his deep interest in the work of these churches attracted the people to him at once, and it was abundantly evident that the Episcopal diocese of Virginia has chosen the right man to help Bishop Gibson in the great work of the diocese. especially in the important country parishes.
Bishop Brown left Alexandria this morning for Richmond.
