There were 23 present at the Couples Club meeting Sunday, Nov. 20. Uel McCullough conducted the business meeting. Carl Anderson reported that the price quoted him for a turn-table for use of the chime records at the church is too high, so the committee will look further. They hope to secure some new records also.

Plans for the Christmas dinner meeting for December 4th were put into operation by each person being given an assignment of food for the 6:30 dinner. Vida Anderson is chairman of the dinner committee.

Members of the club and their children will attend. The dinner menu is super-delicious! There will be a gift exchange and all anticipate a grand time.

The John Thadys were in charge of the program, and John introduced Sgt. Vern Holloway of the Maricopa County Police Force, who gave a most interesting account of the workings of the County Annex to the jail. The buildings are set on 45 acres of ground, much of which is planted and the grain and other plantings harvested by the prisoners. Pictures of the kitchen and bunk rooms were shown the group. The place is clean and Sgt. Holloway says the food is simple but good. A full course meal, including meat or meat substitute, vegetables, salad, dessert and drinks, is served daily, and yet many of the prisoners 'crab.' Once when the macaroni and cheese burned just a little in the bottom of the pan, there was a riot! Another time, when cheese with caraway seeds was used, the men insisted there were bugs in it! Escapees from the Annex, when apprehended, are sent to the Main Jail and not allowed to return to the Annex, which is preferable to the Jail.

Sgt. Holloway invited one or all of the club members to 'come and have dinner with us at any time.'

The Abe Steeles were hosts. They served delicious date-nut pudding with whipped cream, coffee and tea, and a delightful social hour followed. Guests were Sgt. and Mrs. Holloway, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rowley, the latter of whom will be members of the club following the activities of the holiday season.

The next meeting will be the Christmas party.
