NORFOLK, Sept. 20.

The Officers of his Imperial Majesty's ship Thetis (having put up the flag of distress, and run ashore on the coast of the U. S.) was fired at and afterwards set on fire by two ships of the line and a frigate of his Britannic Majesty, do express publicly their gratitude to the good inhabitants of the U.S. for the generous conduct and care they have shown to the distressed men who were on the French ship. This conduct, Americans, is conformable to the principles of civilized nations, and will prove to the Old World the high opinion we had conceived of the hospitality of this New World.
