We very cheerfully publish the following from a friend of Mr. Allen. In endorsing the report, last week, that Mr. A. was in favor of Mr. Calhoun, we thought we had ample security.

It turns out, however, to have been "a mistake."

MR. EDITOR: An opinion having gone abroad that Mr. Robert Allen is opposed to Gen. Jackson's administration, and in favor of the pretensions of Mr. Calhoun; and that opinion having been strengthened by an editorial paragraph in your paper of the 7th instant; I ask, as an act of justice to Mr. Allen, that you will publish in your next paper the following extract of a letter from him to a gentleman of this town, and now in the possession of

A FRIEND TO FAIR PLAY.

Extract of a letter from Robert Allen, Esq. to a gentleman in Winchester, dated July 3, 1831.

"How or when or where the report could have originated, that I was opposed to Gen. Jackson's administration or his re-election, I cannot conceive. 'Tis a mistake; for I am in favor of both, and so informed Mr. Calhoun himself a few days before the adjournment of the last Congress. I told him that not only would I myself go for the re-election of General Jackson, but that there was a large majority of the people of the district, and I believed the state, in his favor. Mr. Calhoun then said this was right, and that the General ought to be re-elected. What his opinions now are, I know not. Mine are unchanged. I like Mr. Calhoun as a man. I admit his splendid talents, and feel grateful to him for his services during the last war. But unless his political notions are changed from what they were when in congress and secretary of war, I can never go for him or with him, with my present notions."
