FOR THE ENQUIRER. A CARD. A Communication In the Richmond Whig of the 6th instant, signed by the senior Editor of that paper, contains statements which render it proper for me to notice it. The writer says, that when he went into the Democratic meeting, which was in session in Goochland Courthouse, at July Court, I was descanting on the law which General Harrison's opponents say he voted for, which had for its object the "selling of poor white men for debt." This is a mistake. I spoke of no such law. I heard of no allusion to such an one. I did say, however, that a Harrison Democrat was a man who advocated the claims of a statesman for the highest office in the gift of a free people, whose Democracy led him to sanction a law authorizing and requiring the sale of poor white men, or any persons, into bondage and degrading slavery for the payment of a fine or cost, or both, in which they might be mulcted on conviction of any crime or penal law. When the offensive language was used, I was not guilty of the precipitation which any one would infer from the account given of the occurrence in the Whig. I inquired of a gentleman near me, whether or not I properly understood the language of Mr. Pleasants. I then called on him for an explanation. He said he did not hear this call. Afterwards he used language which I thought no one could misunderstand. It was then, and not till then, that I exhibited "pugnacious" symptoms. After this, Mr. Pleasants made an explanation with which I was satisfied. WALTER D. LEAKE.
