Republican County Convention, Held in Baraga Thursday Afternoon.
The Republican county convention was held in the Town Hall, in Baraga, Thursday afternoon, for the purpose of placing in nomination candidates for the various county offices.
The meeting was called to order at 2:30 o'clock. After the call had been read, the name of F. W. Schwalm was proposed for temporary chairman and John Funke for secretary. Joseph McKindles and August Ohman were chosen tellers.
The following committees were then named:
Credentials—Philip Voetsch, Peter Bloom, Dr. R. S. Buckland.
Organization and resolutions—P. F. Tracy, Robert Price and Charles Rambaud.
A recess was then taken for the purpose of allowing the committees an opportunity to make their reports.
Upon re-assembling, the committee on credentials reported the following named delegates present and entitled to seats:
Arvon township—August Ohman, August Westrom.
Baraga—James Maher, Peter Bloom, Robert Price, John Funke, Dr. R. S. Buckland, S. Clements, F. W. Schwalm, S. Denomie.
Covington—P. F. Tracy.
L'Anse (Precinct No. 1)—Charles Rambaud, Philip Voetsch, Andrew Johnson, Joseph McKindles, Coridon Johnston.
L'Anse, Precinct No. 2, not represented.
Spurr—James McKercher.
The temporary organization was made permanent. The committee on resolutions offered the following which was adopted:
"The Republicans of Baraga county in convention assembled endorse the appointment of Gen. Russell A. Alger as United States senator and urge his election as such at the coming session of the legislature."
The nomination of county officers was next in order. For judge of probate to fill vacancy James McMahon was the only candidate and received the nomination.
For sheriff there were two candidates, Octave Sicotte, of L'Anse, and Andrew Giddings, of Baraga. A ballot resulted in 9 votes for Sicotte and 8 for Giddings. Sicotte was declared nominated.
Martin Voetsch and Geo. O. Beebler, both of L'Anse, were in the field for county clerk and register of deeds. Voetsch received 15 votes, winning the nomination.
For treasurer, Geo. E. Ibbottson, of Baraga and Chas. H. Anderson, of Skanee, were rival candidates. On a ballot Mr. Ibbottson received 12 votes, which gave him the nomination.
There were no candidates for the offices of prosecuting attorney and circuit court commissioner.
Louis Nicholson, of Covington, was unanimously nominated for the office of county surveyor, and Coridon Johnston, of L'Anse, and Dr. R. S. Buckland, of Baraga, for coroners.
F. W. Schwalm was chosen chairman of the county committee for the ensuing two years, and the following named gentlemen from the various townships as members of the committee:
Arvon—August Ohman.
Baraga—James Maher.
Covington—P. F. Tracy.
L'Anse—Charles Rambaud.
Spurr—James McKercher.
There being no further business to transact the meeting adjourned.
