400 PEOPLE OUT FOR OPENING OF BOYD PARK
Bert Boyd, Donor of Park and Improvements Tendered Honor
OPEN FREE FOR WEEK; STAGE TENNIS GAMES

Bert A. Boyd, donor of Boyd Park, was honored last night at the formal opening of the playground for the summer season.

The park was opened on the 13th, Mr. Boyd's "lucky day" and he was presented with a large basket containing 13 roses by the city and the chamber of commerce.

About 400 persons, including several visitors and summer residents, attended.

In the opening program, H. E. Buchanan, president of the chamber of commerce, and Mayor A. V. Edwards accepted the park improvements on behalf of the chamber of commerce and the city and thanked Mr. Boyd for having made them possible. Thos. H. Franks made the response for Mr. Boyd, who is not in good health.

For Mr. Boyd, Mr. Franks said that since he first came here several years ago he has formed a strong attachment for Hendersonville people and that it gave him great delight to provide the conveniences now installed in the park. He was thanked personally by scores of people who attended the opening.

Mr. Buchanan recognized J. H. Lampley, E. A. Smyth 3rd, and J. T. Fain, Jr., as the chamber of commerce entertainment committee, and B. L. Foster, A. S. Truex, O. Y. Brownlee, Jr., and F. M. Waters as the park committee.

Mr. Boyd requested that the park be open free all this week, and the committee agreed to his request. Nominal fees will be charged after the first week for use of shuffleboard, tennis and other courts.

J. F. Goodman and Bill Crowder will be in charge of the park this summer.

Among the improvements for this season are four new shuffleboard courts, colored lights for the fountain, a lighting system for night playing on two of the four tennis courts and croquet court, and re-lighting of the shuffleboard courts.

In an exhibition tennis match following the re-dedication ceremonies, Mel Lane and George Fain defeated John Stephens and Bob Anders, 7-5. Stephens and Anders defeated Charley Cheves and Fain 6-4 in the second exhibition.
