Boss Of House
NEW YORK. - (ANP)- John Rankin, regarded in many circles as one of the nation's top race and labor baiters, was called "boss of the house of representatives" here last week by Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., during a session of the 79th biennial convention of the New York State Federation of Temple sisterhoods.
Speaking in a symposium, Rep. Powell said, "The No. 1 unchallenged fascist of America, John Rankin, has become boss of the house of representatives." He based his charges on Rankin's success since V-J day to win sufficient support for every measure he has favored while only "two or three" he has opposed have been approved.
Powell's charges merely confirm a similar charge made by CIO representatives about a year ago that the house of representatives was pro-Rankin. Members of the house, who silently endorse racism and labor baiting, were described as looking upon the Mississippian as a hero. Newsmen have also reported Rankin as one of the most popular members of the house.
"What the house did to the OPA the other day proves it," Powell told 150 delegates to the three-day meeting.
